Mathematician, astronomer, philosopher - Hypatia (355 C.E.) was adept in many disciplines. Her work as a mathematician represented the earliest work of a female mathematician ever recorded. To this day, our teaching ethos at Hypatia Hong Kong is grounded by this sense of empowerment and natural curiosity.
Hypatia of Alexandria
The Rho ρ
Hypatia of Alexandria invented the graduated hydrometer, a device used to measure the relative gravity and density of fluids. ρ (rho) - the 17th letter of the Greek alphabet, is a commonly used symbol for defining densities. Which is our reasoning behind using ρ as our company logo.
"Historians seldom concur in praising anyone. It's too much fun to point out human limitations. Hypatia is a rare exception. It appears that she really was one of the great intellects, and one of the great people, of the ancient world." - John H. Lienhard IV, Profesor, University of Houston
"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants." - Issac Newton, 1675
